Technical Assistance and Advocacy

Community gardeners know the value their gardens have in improving the quality of life for all residents in their communities, both gardeners and non-gardeners alike. These gardens have been an effective way of dealing with some of the vacant land inventory in their neighborhoods. However, in some cases they have needed help convincing politicians and developers that community gardens need to be preserved and are not just temporary uses for vacant land. Gardens are not easy to move, physically or emotionally, and are not considered temporary uses of vacant land by those who garden them. NGA, in partnership with the gardeners, has been educating and advocating for the preservation of community gardening projects. NGA stresses the importance of including green spaces in overall development strategies of a community. Community groups receive technical assistance with ownership research, legal work and negotiations to acquire their gardens. In some cases, NGA holds title to the gardens for the gardeners.
